Lesson 11 Crabs

Dear Creative friends:

As we wind down this semester.  I want to thank you for signing your students up for Joyousbrush Club.  Each week we explore a sea creature in its shape and form, it's anatomy and their functions.  We paint them with personalized best effort strokes.

We did crabs this past week.  Do view our gallery in school hall way for 1 last week. The paintings will be taken down on our last class 12/2/13.    I have updated the blogspot for your viewing:   hhttp://joyousbrushclubatshallowfordfalls.blogspot.com/  I am delighted  to hear your students say"  It looked really hard, but it's really not after you do it" .  What better way to build their confidence through painting.

I regret that I did not sent their paintings home for Thanksgiving brag during the Thanksgiving gathering.  Hopefully, they can be a conversation piece during the Christmas holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving

Lesson 10 Octopus

No body understands the fun we have in painting these sea creatures.  I usually give my students some guava candies for encouragement.  No body cared about Guava candies today.  They are totally absorbed in their octopus.  We talk about the long stroke of their legs.  We even sing to help with our long unbroken strokes.  How these legs can create interesting design, perspective and interaction.

Lesson 9 Lobsters

This ends our series of shrimp, crawl fish and lobster.  The same differences allows us more practice.  We explored layout, background color and under the sea abstract design.  Do stop by our gallery in school hall way.  You can see each student's uniqueness in their personal touch from the same lesson.  Enjoy.

Lesson 8 Crawl fish

I took some crawl fish from a Chinese seafood restaurant and brought it to our Joyousbrush class for sample.  It awaken the students' appetite to look, to marvel, to wonder, to question, and to joke about.  How inquisitive minds learn.  How nature delights.  How satisfying it is to unite the mind and the nature through the exercise of painting.

Lesson 7 shrimp

We painted shrimp today.  Yes, it is all about following instructions.  Once we know how to follow instructions, then personal style can be developed.  This is the fastest way to learn.

We will attempt it again in color next week.

lesson 6 goldfish topview

We continued with goldfish today on the top view, this seems a bit easier for the students.  We practiced the side strokes of the fins and tail, then we put them together.  I wish we have more practice time.  The hour just fly by so quickly.

Lesson 5 Gold fish side view

We attempted goldfish from the side this week.  Some of the students have trouble with this view, next week we will paint the top view.  We need to capture the flowy tail with more practice anyway.

Lesson 4 Mono chromatic coloring

We colored our black and white dolphin with different intensity of blue.  We stroke the landscape, water, cloud, horizon, sun or moon, contrasting the stroke and leaving the blank.

Lesson 2 Dolphins

7 decisive strokes completes the dolphin. Outline is an option.  Because it is so simple, it is very hard.
We practiced on rice paper stripes before attempt the painting, but there is very little time, so even when your students are not yet ready, they courageously take up the challenge .  You may view their works on the hall way, Let them bless you with delightful conversations.

lesson 1 Fish

We attempt to paint fish with simple 1 swift definite stroke.  We then goes on decorating our stoke with details.  The demonstration seems very simplistic, but the discipline in attaining that simplicity takes drilling.

lesson 8, 9

Lesson 7

Lesson 5, 6 Sparrow perching on plum blossom

Lesson 3 & 4 Chicks and Flying Sparrows

We are having so much fun building upon the basic physical features of the birds.  Last Friday we did the color chicks and this week we did the sparrow.  I have attached my demonstrations for your reference.  If you see your student's paintings hanging on the hall way in school, you will be surprised at how well they follow the instruction.  The relationship between the beak and the eyes are still fussy in your student's mind, but as we continue with various kinds of birds, they will catch on.

Next Friday we will perch the sparrows on plum blossom.  We will joyfully anticipate the coming of Spring with our painting.

Lesson 2 chicks and rocks

We move forward from last week's pencil drawing and ink outline of the chicks, into 3 simple strokes of head and body while maintaining the walking egg.  We emphasized the beak and eye relation, the legs and it's backwards bended knees.  Some students are still very frustrated with this challenge of painting birds, but their impression is forming gradually, the repeated focus on various birds eventually will develop their confidence. You may view their paintings displayed on the school hall way. I outlined some of their chicks to show them that it'll all workout.

We also contrasted the wet stroke for the chicks and the dry stroke for the rocks in this lesson.  I painted interactively with the students to help them with the form of the rocks. Nex week we will have fun coloring them.

2013 Spring Lesson 1

This term we are going to study birds.  We start with the simplest bird, chicks.  We start our chick with an egg.  We place 2 feet on the egg so it is a walking egg. Then we poke their heads out, lastly we add the wing and optional tail.  This is a pencil study and ink outline.  If you have friends who may want to paint with us.  They are welcome to join in next week.  It is a 12 weeks session.  New students can still catch up.
We will perch some birds next week.
